Ruth Murray Underhill papers 1959-1965

Ruth Murray Underhill (1884-1984) was a social worker, anthropologist, and teacher. She studied the Papago tribe of Southern Arizona while attending Columbia University. The collection includes her manuscripts, minor correspondence, and mementos of George W. Ingalls (1838-1920), Indian agent and superintendent of religious work among Indians for the American Baptist Home Mission Society.

Anthropologist Ruth Murray Underhill served as Supervisor of Indian Education with the U.S. Indian Service from 1942-1948 and was professor of Anthropology at the University of Denver from 1948-1952. She was born in Ossining, New York on August 22, 1884 and graduated from Vassar College in 1905 with a B.A. in comparative literature. She earned a Ph. U.S. Indian Agent, mine operator, businessman, probation officer, and journalist, George W. Ingalls lived and worked in several western states from 1870 to 1915. In the 1870's Ingalls served as U.S. Indian Agent for Nevada, Utah, and southeastern California and was later appointed agent for the Consolidated Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole Indian tribes.
